Pasikuda is a dream location for photographers, offering more than just flawless beachscapes. The area’s unique combination of calm ocean, colonial architecture, vibrant local culture, and tranquil lagoons provides endless creative opportunities. From capturing the perfect golden hour moment to freezing a slice of authentic Sri Lankan life, these seven spots are guaranteed to fill your memory cards and create truly eye catching travel content.
The Iconic Pasikuda Bay Shallows
This is the quintessential Pasikuda shot. The main bay is world famous for its calm waters that remain ankle or knee deep for hundreds of meters out.
The Photo Angle
Walk out into the water until you are far from the shoreline. Shoot back towards the beach or straight out to the horizon. Use the clear, turquoise water as the dominant foreground element to emphasize the surreal, glass like calmness.
Best Time
Mid morning (9:00 AM to 11:00 AM) when the sun is high enough to hit the shallow white sand, illuminating the water into its brightest, most vivid turquoise hue.

Sunrise on Kalkudah Beach
While Pasikuda is busy, its quiet neighbour, Kalkudah Beach, offers a peaceful, rustic alternative for sunrise chasers.
The Photo Angle
Focus on the wide, empty stretch of sand. Use a long exposure if possible to soften the waves. The best shots feature the silhouettes of local fishermen or their traditional outrigger canoes (oruwa) against the intensely colored sky as the sun breaks the horizon.
Best Time
Sunrise (exact time changes seasonally, but be ready 30 minutes before the official time for the best pre dawn colors).
Batticaloa Dutch Fort Ramparts
A short drive from Pasikuda, this historical fort provides architectural drama and panoramic views.
The Photo Angle
The most popular spot is from the western ramparts overlooking the Batticaloa Lagoon. Frame a shot of an old cannon or a crumbling stone archway with the glassy lagoon and distant palms providing the backdrop. This juxtaposition of old stone and calm water is highly effective.
Best Time
Late afternoon or sunset (golden hour) when the low sun casts long shadows and bathes the granite walls in warm, rich light.
Kallady Bridge
This long, distinctive bridge across the Batticaloa Lagoon offers an excellent architectural composition, especially with water reflections.
The Photo Angle
Shoot from the edge of the lagoon or from the walking path of the bridge itself. Focus on the repeating patterns of the arches or railings. For a dramatic shot, capture the bridge as a dark silhouette against the fiery sunset reflected in the water below.
Best Time
Late afternoon (golden hour) or sunset for stunning reflections.

Kokkadicholai Hindu Temple (Kovil)
For a burst of color and cultural detail, visit one of the region's most important Hindu temples.
The Photo Angle
Focus on the Gopuram (the monumental entrance tower). These towers are intricately layered with hundreds of colourful stone and plaster statues of deities and mythological figures. Use a telephoto lens to zoom in and capture the stunning detail and complexity of the upper tiers.
Best Time
Mid morning or midday, when the sun is brightest and the colors are at their most saturated. Remember to be respectful and ask permission for candid shots of people.
The Coconut Cultural Park Palm Groves
Just near the main Pasikuda resort area is an expansive coconut estate, perfect for capturing tropical textures.
The Photo Angle
Look for leading lines created by the rows of tall palm trees. A ground level or slightly low angle shot looking up into the canopy will emphasize the height and texture of the leaves against the blue sky. This is an excellent spot for creative portraiture using the natural backdrop.
Best Time
Late morning (before midday) when the sunlight creates dramatic shadows and strong contrast in the groves.
Local Fishing Boats at Kallady Beach
Capture the authentic, industrious spirit of the East Coast at Kallady Beach, near Batticaloa.
The Photo Angle
Focus on the fishing boats that are pulled up onto the sand. The old, brightly painted hulls and masts provide excellent texture and color. Shoot wide to include the fishermen mending their nets or hauling in their gear for a powerful cultural narrative.
Best Time
Early morning (after sunrise) when the fishermen are most active and the light is soft, or late afternoon for a warm, low angle shot.
